Classic Minis For Sale

If you are considering buying a Classic Mini that is for sale, read our latest tips. Especially if you are considering a Rover Mini or Mini Cooper

  1. Check the History – A good place to start is by checking the history of the car. Has it been involved in any accidents or had any major repairs? It’s also worth checking if the car has been restored and who has done the work.
  2. Look for Rust – they are notorious for rust, so be sure to check the bodywork thoroughly. Look for rust on the wings, sills, floor, and around the windows. Small areas of rust can be easily repaired, but if there is extensive rust, it can be costly to fix. Check the paint is an even colour across all panels. A perfect mini is hard to find.
  3. Check the condition of the Engine – Ask the seller about the condition of the engine and if it has been rebuilt. Check the oil and coolant levels and look for any leaks.
  4. Take a Test Drive – Always take the car for a test drive before purchasing. Pay attention to the steering, brakes, suspension, and especially the gearbox, does it crunch when selecting second gear. Make sure the car handles well and is comfortable to drive.
  5. Get a Second Opinion – It’s always a good idea to have a mechanic or someone who knows about Classic Minis take a look at the car before purchasing. They can identify any potential issues and give you an idea of what maintenance may be required
  6. When considering a Classic Mini privately, it’s important to do your research and be thorough in your inspections. If you have any doubts, it’s best to walk away and keep searching for better example
  7. Most of these problems will be avoided when you purchase from an established mini specialist dealer. We have already evaluated the car, checked for all known areas of corrosion, we know exactly how panels should fit on a mini.
  8. These Minis are now becoming an expensive car so it is important you settle on the best example that your budget allows. The best cars will be offered by dealers as they are discerning when it comes to quality.
  9. Minis that are original are the most sought after as they certainly hold their value and generally are preferred by investors but are harder to find. Early Mark 1 cars are highly sought after especially if they are original in all respects The early Cooper variants are rare and can be very expensive. The Cooper S variant can be in excess of £60,000 these days if in excellent condition.
  10. The Mini Cooper was reintroduced in 1991 by Rover these were produced until 2000, collectable, but not as desirable as a Mk 1 or Mk 2 cooper. In any event all minis are now referred to as Classic Cars and rightfully so. Even some of the BMW variants are now becoming collectable, especially the John Cooper works
  11. Choosing a mini that is for sale can be a long arduous task, do not rush into buying the first one you see, read adverts closely, unless its totally lovely. Ask for information from specialists, we are a happy lot and more than happy to share our knowledge.
  12. If you are uncertain either walk away or invest in a specialist classic car inspection report. This may save you thousands in the long run and a load of heartache along the way. I wish you well in your search and do not be afraid to give me a call if you want to check a point with me.
  13. Even classics should have some history, be wary of minis that have had multiple owners over a short period of time
  14. Check the Minis MOT history, avoid examples that fail the MOT test on multiple occasions on rust / corrosion issues
  15. The later Rover Minis 1997 especially suffer from corrosion, check rear wheel arches, boot floor and under the windscreen
  16. The auto gearboxes are not the most reliable, but can be converted to manual transmission fairly easily
